Narrogin is the commercial centre of the Wheatbelt South area. The town is surrounded by rich agricultural land and many nature reserves. Wildflowers attract many visitors during spring. There is a good choice of self drive routes enabling viewing of many different wildflowers in and around the area which are easily accessible from Narrogin.
The town of Wickepin, only a 35 minute drive away, is the home of Albert Facey Homestead featured in the book A Fortunate Life. Leading from the homestead enjoy the walk around Yarling Brook and see heritage buildings of the town or in spring visit Malyalling Rock for a picnic lunch and view the beautiful orchids found in the area.
Drive to Wandering, 'Where the Wineries Meet the Wheatbelt'. On this pretty 45 minute drive you will drive through Dryandra Woodland and cross the Hotham River at Pumphreys Bridge near the historic Pumphreys Historical Homestead built in 1888.
There is a large caravan/camping area at the bridge with one toilet but no water or power.
For large groups use of the CWA hall can be booked through the Wandering Shire ph: 9884 1056. Before reaching Wandering and visiting your choice of wineries enjoy the view as you stop at the Church of St Martin.
The newly built Tanglefoot Cellar Door Café already has a good name for its cuisine while Wandering Brook Estate serves an excellent lunch and conducts tours of the winery.
The town of Cuballing is the first town you come to heading north from Narrogin. Take a brochure from the Visitor Centre with you and explore the Heritage buildings of this well presented town noting the corrugated iron sporting signs and ploughman at the town's entry. North of the town is Yornaning Dam, a popular bush camp area.
Popanyinning, affectionately know as Popo, is a small town 15 minutes further north. Enjoy a coffee at the food caravan before taking the nature walk surrounding the town. There is a caravan park just south of the town.
Continuing north you will come to the RV friendly town of Pingelly. Scan the eastern horizon for the huge 15 metre high cross built by a local farmer as a symbol of peace and hope. Pingelly Heights Observatory is open Oct – Apr and is a great place to view the stars and learn more about the Milky Way Galaxy. If you are looking for an over night stop there is a caravan park in town. Visit Tutanning Reserve or Boyagin Rock.
Dryandra Woodland
Located 22km north-west of Narrogin is Dryandra Woodland, one of the most exciting wildlife tourism destinations in Western Australia.
Barna Mia Animal Sanctuary
Located in the heart of Dryandra Woodland is Barna Mia, an endangered animal sanctuary set in a bushland enclosure of ancient grass-trees, wandoo and marri.
Dryandra Woodland offers visitors an excellent opportunity to observe a vast array of native animals, including numbats, echidnas, possums, woylies and kangaroos in their native habitat.
Winding gravel roads, a range of walking trails and a unique radio drive trail allow visitors to experience Dryandra's picturesque open woodland scenery and floral beauty. Accommodation is available at Congelin Campground or self contained cottages at the Lions Dryandra Village.
Visitors to Barna Mia can participate in a fascinating guided spotlight walk under the stars to look for some of Western Australia's most threatened marsupials, including the bilby and boodie. Bookings essential. Ph: 9881 9200 weekdays & 9881 2064 weekends.
Bushwalking
Bush walking is another favourite pastime in the area. Foxes Lair, a bushland reserve on the edge of town, the large granite outcrop of Yilliminning Rock and Dryandra Woodland, all offer the opportunity to explore the area's wildflowers and plants.
